Terms of Service

The rules for using TheStudyStack as a student, teacher or school.

The short version

  • -TheStudyStack is for learning and teaching. It is free for students.
  • -Be kind, keep your login to yourself, and do not try to cheat or break things.
  • -Your answers belong to you. We only use them to run TheStudyStack for you and your class.
  • -AI marks can be wrong. Ask your teacher if you think a mark is unfair.
  • -If something worries you, tell your teacher or email privacy@thestudystack.co.uk.

1.About these terms

These terms are an agreement between you and Liam McClean, a sole trader in the United Kingdom who runs TheStudyStack ("we", "us"). By using TheStudyStack you agree to them. If you are under 18, please read them with a parent, carer or teacher.

When a school uses TheStudyStack, our data processing terms for schools also apply between us and the school. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.

2.Who can use TheStudyStack

  • -Students can use an account their school gives them, or create their own.
  • -If you are under 13 and want your own account rather than a school one, you need a parent or carer's permission.
  • -Teacher accounts are for staff at schools we have approved, using the school's teacher access code.
  • -Teachers who add pupils or create pupil accounts confirm that their school allows them to use TheStudyStack for that class.

3.Your account

  • -Give accurate details and keep them up to date.
  • -Keep your password secret and do not let anyone else use your account. Tell your teacher or us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.
  • -Choose a username that does not include your full name, address, phone number or anything unkind.
  • -Accounts made by a school belong to the school. Teachers there can reset the password, suspend the account or delete it, and you cannot delete it yourself.

4.Community rules

These apply to usernames, clan names, answers, comments and anything else you put on TheStudyStack:

  • be kind: no bullying, threats, hate, swearing or sexual content
  • do not pretend to be someone else or get into anyone else's account
  • do not share your own or anyone else's personal details, like addresses, phone numbers or social media
  • do not use bots, scripts or other tricks to cheat in live quizzes, games or leaderboards
  • do not try to find answer keys, break or overload the site, or copy its content automatically
  • do not post anything illegal, or anything you do not have the right to share

If someone breaks these rules, we may remove or change what they posted, reset their username or clan name, or suspend their account. Where a school account is involved we tell the school.

5.Reporting a problem

If anything on TheStudyStack upsets you or seems wrong, tell your teacher or email privacy@thestudystack.co.uk. We read every report and act first on anything about someone's safety.

If a report suggests a pupil may be at risk of harm, we tell their school's Designated Safeguarding Lead. If a child is in immediate danger, we contact the police. If you disagree with something we did after a report, email us and we will look at it again.

6.Teachers and schools

  • -Manage your classes, join codes and invite links, and only add pupils you are allowed to teach.
  • -Keep printed login slips for school accounts secure, and hand them only to the right pupils.
  • -Do not put sensitive details, such as health or family circumstances, in lesson notes, feedback or class names.
  • -Check AI mark suggestions before relying on them. If you set an assignment to AI marking, marks can reach pupils without you checking each one.
  • -Only upload or create material you own or are allowed to use.
  • -Follow your school's own policies on data protection, safeguarding and online safety.

7.AI marking

Some written answers can be checked by an AI model that suggests which marking points were met. Suggestions can be wrong, so treat them as a guide, not a final mark. Students can ask their teacher to review any mark on an assignment. The Privacy Policy explains what data the AI receives.

8.Your work and our content

  • -Your work is yours. Students and teachers keep ownership of the answers, drawings, feedback and material they create. You give us permission to store, show and process it only so we can run TheStudyStack for you and your class. That permission ends when it is deleted.
  • -We never sell your work, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models.
  • -Our questions, notes, games and design belong to us or the people who licensed them to us. You can use them for your own study, and teachers can use them in their own teaching. Please do not copy or republish them elsewhere.
  • -TheStudyStack is independent and is not made or endorsed by OCR or any other exam board. Exam board names are used only to show which specification content matches.

9.Accuracy of content

We work hard to keep revision content correct and up to date, but it can contain mistakes and cannot guarantee exam results. Check important points against your exam board's specification and your teacher's advice. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.

10.Price and availability

TheStudyStack is currently free for students. Gems, streaks and other rewards have no money value and cannot be bought or exchanged. We aim to keep the service running, but it may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or because of problems with our providers. We may change or remove features; if a change significantly affects schools, we give them notice first.

11.Ending your use

  • -You can stop using TheStudyStack at any time. You can delete your own account in Settings, and school accounts are deleted by the school.
  • -We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or to protect other users. Where we can, we explain why and give the chance to put things right.
  • -A school can stop using TheStudyStack at any time and ask us to delete or return its data.

12.Our responsibility to you

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit.

If digital content we provide damages your device or other digital content because we did not use reasonable care and skill, we will either repair the damage or pay you fair compensation. We are not responsible for losses we could not reasonably have foreseen, or for business losses.

13.Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service or the law changes. For important changes we tell users in the app and tell schools in advance. If you do not agree to the new terms, you can stop using TheStudyStack and delete your account.

14.Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts. Please contact us first so we can try to sort things out.
